Climate - Food - Energy - Population Nexus

The vision of IRDT is to ensure that the poor and marginalized are treated equally with dignity, respect and rights, especially in areas of natural resource management such as water where socially inequitable distribution is compounded by the variability of climatic conditions. The project will address this by ensuring that the agricultural plots will have Trench-cum-Bunds (TcBs), and that farm Ponds are adopted by their Gram Panchayat as a key NRM strategy. The TcBs will also serve as an example for the GP to emulate on all cultivable lands under the remaining 6 villages under the Gram Panchayat. By Introducing Farm ponds and DLTs (drainage line treatments) through a watershed plan, the project will also introduce planning as a systemic intervention at the GP level. TcBs, FPs and DLTs will harvest run-off rain water and convert these into sub-surface interflows.

Water often goes to those who have the power to influence its deployment. By ensuring that all lands are treated equally, the project will ensure that every farmer will be eligible to a share of rainwater that is proportionate to his landholding. The project will influence subsequent actions (organizing of FP and DLT UGs, tree plantation on TcB bunds, and accessing of government benefits and entitlements) based on their small and marginal holding status. While no one will be discriminated against, Small and marginal households will serve as pilots and role models in the accessing and use of water, enhancing their resilience against the climate change. Enhanced water availability will facilitate livestock care, improve access to drinking water, reduce moisture stress in agriculture and reduce water related human morbidity.
